Niche for curtains in the stretch ceiling

Ceiling niche is an interesting solution that allows you to skillfully decorate an unattractive cornice and make the room more beautiful. Niches differ from each other in location and structure.

Special features

Ceiling niche is a kind of box in the ceiling, which allows you to hide unsightly details: the eaves, the electric drive to control the curtains, curtain tape and so on. By mounting the niche under the eaves, it turns out to improve the overall look of the room. Curtains, flowing as if from nowhere, fit almost any style of interior.

Niches, equipped in suspended or suspended ceilings, have a number of features. They are different in their location, structure, width, depth, complexity of installation. The box can be equipped not only for classic curtains, but also for unusual Japanese panels, as well as for vertical roller blinds.

The advantages of such a box include the following qualities.

  • Equipped box allows you to hide an unattractive cornice and "stuffing", responsible for moving the curtains.
  • Curtains that seem to flow from the ceiling, look spectacular and stylish.
  • The window opening is neatly decorated.
  • It is possible to visually make the ceiling of the room higher.
  • A niche allows you to mount a LED backlight and make the overall look of the room more elegant and mysterious.

It should be noted that for rooms with low ceilings only a niche that fits directly into the main ceiling is suitable. It will not work out on its own, since such works require special equipment and professional training.

Niches with a false ceiling to equip in small rooms is not worth it.

Kinds

A suspended niche ceiling is no longer a novelty. Designers have tried various options that later “caught on” as a special classification. Today, there are several varieties of niches:

  • The box is equipped around the perimeter of the room along the walls. It is usually made with a backlight, which is controlled by a separate switch, making it possible to adjust the lighting as you see fit.
  • A niche under the curtain is equipped along the wall with a window opening. This option is often used for narrow rectangular rooms, placing the curtains in the future along the entire wall. This option is usually made out the backlight, but not always. It all depends on the level of illumination of the room and the design of the curtains.
  • The niche is equal to or slightly wider than the window opening. Usually this model is equipped only for curtains and is used in classic interiors. In the future, niches are decorated with moldings.

According to the method of execution, there can be niches in the capital ceiling, plasterboard structures or niches for false ceiling.

  • In the ceiling ceiling. They are made with a jackhammer. Professionals form a niche, trim it, after which you can stretch the canvas stretch ceiling in the usual way.
  • From plasterboard. Equipped with a special box directly on the ceiling. This niche looks aesthetically pleasing and attractive, and you can mount it yourself if you have experience in the construction business.Special materials are not required.
  • Under false ceiling. To date, this method of equipment niche is the easiest, however, it can only be used when forming a niche under the eaves in the entire wall. Installation is made on the capital ceiling, the niche does not look repaired in the future, but the materials for its construction are needed more than affordable.

Materials

Different types of niches require the use of different materials. For all types of work, special antiseptic agents will be needed to prevent mold or mildew on the ceiling. To make a drywall niche, you will need sheets of drywall. Depending on the room, you should choose a regular gypsum plasterboard (GCR) or a plasterboard waterproof sheet (GKLV), for example, to the kitchen.

It is necessary to purchase profiles (guide and rack) for the future fixation of the box. Normal UD-27 and CD-60 will do. So that in the gypsum ceiling there are no irregularities and gaps, you will need putty and sandpaper. It is necessary to purchase metal screws for further fixing of the whole structure.

A niche for a false ceiling requires you to purchase a bar made of treated wood duringthe entire length of the box, mounts for the bar and mounts for the stretch ceiling.

Also need screws and dowels.

The toolkit is used almost identical:

  • Hacksaw and regular.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Roulette.
  • A simple pencil for marking.
  • Sandpaper.

If profiles without perforation are selected, it is necessary to add a punch to the list. For cutting plasterboard can be useful construction knife.

What size do?

The width and depth of the niche depends on the type of curtains and measurements taken. For example, it is not necessary to make a deep niche for stringed cornice, while for a tire multi-row box it should be wider and deeper. The most important step is to take measurements correctly. When planning a niche, we must not forget that the curtains in it should be placed freely; not open the door to touch either the niche, the windowsill, or the heating radiator.

Many examples demonstrate that if you forget to take into account the location of the radiator or window sill (depending on what comes out more), you will not get a beautiful view in the future. Therefore, measurements should start with this part. Usually the protrusion of the sill / radiator is 15 cmbut it is better to measure individually for your room.

Next you need to add to this value 10-12 cm, which serve as an amendment to the assembly of curtains.

It is also necessary to lay the distance between the extreme guides of the eaves (for example, for a standard two-row width is 4 cm). By adding all the parameters (the removal of the battery / window sill + the distance between the rails of the eaves + correction for the assembly of curtains), you get the ideal value of the width of the niche.

To calculate the depth of the niche, it is necessary to add the height of the cornice (about 1.5 cm), the height of the curtain tape (5-15 cm depending on the type chosen) and the correction for the angle of view (approximately 8 cm). The minimum depth of the niche is 15 cm, the maximum - 40 cm. The best choice is the option with a 20-centimeter depth.

When calculating the length of the box above the window opening, the following parameters should be added:

  • The width of the window opening.
  • If the edges of the window sill are issued for an opening, instead of the width of the window opening, the length of the window sill is taken from edge to edge.
  • Correction for the assembly is from 10 to 50 cm, depending on the type of curtains selected (10 cm for drop-down curtains of Roman design, 50 - for thick curtains).

Subtleties of installation

The most common option for niches today are mounted with a wooden bar. Consider the option in more detail:

  • First you need to prepare a place under the eaves. Thoroughly clean the capital ceiling, putty all flaws. Treat with mildew agent.
  • Mark the ceiling, it will facilitate further installation. Draw a parallel line to the wall on the ceiling with a simple pencil, going to the walls. The distance from the wall to the line is equal to the width of the niche.
  • Lock the beam so that it is in contact with the line. Use metal mounts, screws, dowels. Fix the beam, varying the width of the step of fasteners depending on the alleged severity of the curtains: the heavier the curtains, the stronger the bar should be fixed.
  • Attach the profile to the beam under the stretch ceiling and stretch it, as usual from a wooden block to the opposite wall. Niche is ready.

Note that this method is more suitable for high rooms, as it additionally conceals 15-20 cm of the ceiling (the value varies depending on the depth of the niche). If there is no possibility to install a niche, hang up the usual cornice and close it with a molding, decorating the whole room around the perimeter. So you can save the height of the ceiling, and find an inexpensive solution for registration.

Zoning Ideas

Niches are equipped not only for window curtains. Plasterboard options are perfect for dividing the space. Take a look at a selection of examples that clearly demonstrate the merits of this approach.

For a one-bedroom apartment, it is important to create two or more functional zones in the same room. The curtains in the middle of the room help with this. The top of translucent curtains is hidden in a niche that occupies the entire wall. Pan approved reception at the same time combined the room and zoned it by dividing the design of the ceiling space.

In this case, the niche length is limited by another plasterboard construction - the cabinet.

Here the niche is wider, which creates the illusion of a ceiling level drop. This option is not so bad, because in time it will be possible to replace the classic curtain with an interesting panel curtain. She will cope with the role of the separator much better.

The separation of a small bay window with a niche is often used when decorating houses. This technique allows you to balance the proportions of the room. It is important not to overload the box with an abundance of decorative elements: in this case, the wall construction is supplemented with a modest wide plinth, however, the effect of flowing curtains is preserved.

A semicircular niche is a rather interesting and bold decision, however, to install such an option, you need space. In small rooms, figured boxes look ridiculous. The highlight was a good idea. It distracts part of the attention to itself, so that at first glance the box is imperceptible and it seems that the curtains are fixed inside the ceiling itself.

Examples in the interior

Classic variants of different types of niches in the interior are presented to your attention.

  • For interior design in a contemporary style, installing a hidden cornice is a real find. This solution allowed to make the interior brighter, fresher, more dynamic, while maximally “exposing” the window and letting enough light into the room. Soft yellowish lighting curtains smooth corners, adding a cozy living room.
  • Figured box of drywall with light can be constructed around the perimeter of the room. An interesting sloping wall is repeated in the design of the ceiling, attracting attention. The niche here is used as a decorative element, allowing not to distract attention from the shape of the room. The cornice is hidden delicately, the model in the entire wall allows not to overload the interior with additional bends.
  • For rooms in the Baroque style, choosing a niche across the width of a window opening is the best option. She looks moderately pompous and majestic, besides being the most traditional of all. Having covered the ceiling box with a molding or a wide plinth, you can emphasize the unusual design, but do it with taste.
  • Glossy coatings are usually used for illuminated eaves, however, in this case, this choice allowed us to emphasize the majesty of the hall. The box helped to hide the curtain rail, so that it would not attract attention from the round multi-tiered ceiling. White color has become an excellent choice.
  • A properly made niche should not create wrinkles at all levels of curtains, including lambrequins. The backlight is not installed on the cornice itself, but in front of the box, but it still draws attention to the unusual top of the curtains, decorated with swaggy. The matte texture of the ceiling covering allows you to add a room to comfort. Such variations are good for rooms where it is necessary to create a mysterious atmosphere.
